the Translator’s Studio – ongoing tutoring

The Translator’s Studio specialises in French- and Spanish-to-English translator training and is home to the DipTrans and CertTrans preparatory courses, reverse translation courses for English-to-Spanish/French translators and more.

PAST EVENTS

ELEVATE TRADOS CONFERENCE (6 OCTOBER 2021, 13:00-13:45 BST)

I am delighted to have been invited to speak at the Trados autumn conference “Elevate” on the topic of launching and progressing a translation career. In my session, “Prepare for lift-off”, I will share how I overcame the frequently experienced challenges of starting up a translation business that led me to win the ITI’s 2020 award for “Best Newcomer (Freelancing)” and how things have developed since then.

This session will touch on business-centred topics they don’t teach you on most academic courses, with a focus on the key foundation blocks of planning, specialising and collaboration. You will leave with practical and achievable tips on how to find rewarding work and create a sustainable business in an increasingly competitive marketplace. 

Although the session is primarily aimed at budding freelance translators, feedback from my previous sessions on similar topics has been that even the most experienced practitioners come away with renewed motivation and fresh approaches.

ITI’S SUFT COURSE (AUTUMN 2021 and 2022)

I am a regular tutor on the Institute of Translation and Interpreting’s Setting Up as a Freelance Translator (SUFT) course this autumn. I took this course myself, so I know just how helpful it is!

Over a number of weeks, this online course provides newcomers to the translation profession with the additional skills and knowledge they will need to succeed in the competitive world of freelance translation.

Central to the success of the course is the personalised feedback and mentoring received from the tutors and the peer-to-peer learning you gain from the other students. Students will have direct access to ten successful practising translators. Each tutor will cover a different topic in two separate sessions.

The next SUFT course starts in September 2022.

swati cOURSE – ITI & UNIVERSITY OF WESTMINSTER
(2020, 2021, 2022, 2023)

I have presented for the last four years at the online SWATI (Starting Work as a Translator or Interpreter) event organised by the Institute of Translation and Interpreting. This event was aimed at those taking their first steps as a professional translator or interpreter.

ITI’S CHRISTMAS HAMPER (December 2021)

ITI’s Christmas Hamper was an online members' day full of learning and networking with something for everyone.

I led a half-hour session about how I overcame the frequently experienced challenges of starting up a freelance translator career that led me to win the ITI Award 2020 for best Newcomer.

ASTON UNIVERSITY – careers in the language industry (6 MAY 2021)

I was delighted to be invited by Aston University to form part of a panel, speaking to 400+ registered attendees about the skills, industry demands and work strategies involved in being a successful freelancer in the language industry.
